How Sustainability Shapes Every Day at Monkey Nut Café
When people think about sustainability, they often picture solar panels, recycling bins or compost heaps.
And while those things certainly matter, sustainability means something much bigger to us.
At Monkey Nut Café, we believe sustainability is about caring for the land that feeds us, supporting the people who make our region special, and creating a place that future generations will enjoy just as much as we do today.
It’s about making decisions that are good for our visitors, our community and our beautiful Barossa Valley.

Supporting Local, Every Chance We Get
One of the easiest ways we can make a positive impact is by supporting the people around us.
Whenever possible, we choose local.
From fresh produce and meats to wines, cheeses and other ingredients, we work closely with Barossa and South Australian suppliers because we know every dollar spent locally helps strengthen our regional economy.
When visitors choose to dine with us, they’re not just supporting our family business. They’re supporting local farmers, makers, producers, artists, musicians and countless other small businesses that help make the Barossa such a special place to visit.

Looking After Our Beautiful Barossa
We feel incredibly privileged to call this part of the world home.
That’s why we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever we can.
Across the Kies Family Wines estate, renewable solar energy helps power our winery, cellar door and Monkey Nut Café. Rainwater harvesting and treated wastewater help reduce our reliance on mains water, while organic material from the winery is composted and returned to the vineyard to improve soil health naturally.
We’re continually looking for practical ways to reduce waste, improve efficiency and care for the land that has cared for our family for generations.

A Café Where Everyone Is Genuinely Welcome
For us, sustainability also means creating a business that welcomes everyone.
We’ve invested heavily in accessibility because we believe every visitor deserves the opportunity to enjoy lunch among the vines.
From step-free access and accessible parking to Braille menus, pictorial menus, social scripts and wheelchair-friendly dining spaces, we’re continually working to remove barriers so more people can experience the Barossa with confidence.
Hospitality should never exclude anyone.

Investing in Our People
The smiling faces that greet you at Monkey Nut Café are one of our greatest strengths.
We believe looking after our team is just as important as looking after our guests.
Our staff receive ongoing training in customer service, accessibility, local history, wine knowledge and first aid so they feel confident delivering warm, genuine hospitality every day.
Many of our team members are local, helping create meaningful employment opportunities while sharing authentic Barossa stories with visitors from around Australia and the world.
Celebrating the Stories of Our Region
The Barossa is much more than world-class wine.
It’s a region rich in history, culture and community.
Through our café, we proudly celebrate our German heritage, acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this land, support local artists and musicians, and share the stories that have shaped this remarkable place for generations.
Every visitor leaves knowing a little more about the people and the place that make the Barossa so unique.

Sustainability Is a Journey
We know sustainability isn’t something you ever finish.
There is always another improvement to make.
Another way to reduce waste.
Another local business to support.
Another opportunity to make someone feel welcome.
We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken, but we’re even more excited about what comes next.
Every coffee poured.
Every meal served.
Every local supplier supported.
Every family welcomed.
Every visitor who leaves smiling.
They’re all part of building a stronger, more sustainable Barossa.
And that’s something we’re incredibly proud to be part of.
We look forward to welcoming you to Monkey Nut Café soon.
