Sustainability in the Barossa: How the Monkey Nut Café Is Doing Its Part

When you visit the Monkey Nut Café in Lyndoch, you’re not just enjoying delicious food and vineyard views – you’re supporting a business committed to sustainable practices. Nestled in the heart of the Kies Family Wines Tourism Complex, the café is working hard behind the scenes to reduce its environmental footprint and protect the beautiful Barossa landscape we all love.

Here’s how we’re putting sustainability into action – and why your next visit is a vote for positive change.

Sourcing Local, Supporting Local

Our kitchen champions the best of the Barossa and beyond by choosing local produce wherever possible. By supporting nearby growers and suppliers, we reduce food miles and keep money circulating in our regional community. It’s not just good for the environment – it’s also great for your tastebuds.

Minimising Food Waste

Food waste is a major issue in hospitality, and we take it seriously. At Monkey Nut Café, we carefully plan menus, manage portions, and repurpose ingredients wherever we can.

Coffee grounds are given to local gardeners, and kitchen off cuts are given to some local Williamstown sheep.

Plastic-Free Where Possible

We’ve cut out single-use plastics wherever we can, from compostable takeaway containers to reusable straws and eco-friendly packaging. Our commitment to reducing waste means you can feel good about your meal from start to finish.

Energy and Water Conscious

Running a café in a wine region means being deeply connected to the land. We keep a close eye on our water usage and work in step with the Kies Family Wines solar battery system, which means we are operating off-grid for a great portion of the year. We adopt energy-efficient equipment and practices including, LED lighting, solar energy, and careful water management, to help reduce our overall impact.

Sustainable Wine, Naturally

When you dine at Monkey Nut Café, you’re just steps from the Kies Family Wines Cellar Door where sustainability is also front of mind. The vineyard team has embraced soil health initiatives, water-wise viticulture, and long-term replanting strategies to ensure the land thrives for generations to come.

So much so that Kies Family Wines is certified Sustainable in both Vineyard and Winemaking Practises by Freshcare.
